BEIJING - Volkswagen named Winfried Vahland as head of its China operations.
Vahland is former vice chairman of VW's Skoda subsidiary. He will report to VW group Chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder.
Vahland takes over at a difficult time for Volkswagen in China. General Motors beat VW as the sales leader in China for the first six months of 2005.
GM China Group says it sold 308,722 units. VW sold 262,198 units, according to the China Daily newspaper. VW has not officially released its figures.
Vahland replaces Bernd Leissner as VW Group China president. Leissner retired at the end of June.
