Wanna be cool in the eyes of the neighborhood teenagers? Just pull up in a Scion, Volkswagen, Jeep, Mini or Porsche.
But don't expect much respect from the teens if you're behind the wheel of a Buick, Lincoln or Mercury. Those brands are at the bottom of CNW Marketing/ Research's "Stodgy Index."
The study by the Bandon, Ore., consulting firm tracks how desirable car brands are to people who are 16 to 24 years old.
Automakers are designing polarizing vehicles such as the boxy Scion xB to attract younger buyers. But even the hipper nameplates don't always attract their intended audience.
For example, Toyota marketers expected the median Scion xB buyer to be 22 years old. But the median buyer is 35, CNW says. That's because older buyers have the financial means to afford a new car, according to CNW. Used cars are still the mainstay for younger buyers.
