Hey, why think small?
In his first public appearance last week, new Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe decided to give his engineers something to keep them on their toes:
Develop a car that could travel across the United States on one tank of fuel.
That means fuel economy of about 200 mpg - or one heck of a big fuel tank.
Said Watanabe: "To realize this dream, I intend to vigorously promote research and development activities."
The project has a ways to go. Toyota's Prius hybrid is rated at 55 mpg, which means it can travel 655 miles - roughly from New York to Cincinnati - on a single tank. That leaves a lot of miles to the Pacific Ocean.
Toyota spokesman Tomomi Imai said: "We haven't set any time frame for achieving this goal."
