WASHINGTON - Ford Motor Co. is recalling 180,000 trucks with 6.0-liter diesel engines for electrical repairs aimed at ending a stalling problem.
Affected vehicles are 2004-05 Ford Excursions, E-350 and E-450 vans, and F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration considers sudden stalling a safety hazard. It conducted a defect investigation of the trucks.
As of February, NHTSA identified more than 3,000 consumer complaints and nearly 13,000 possibly related warranty claims. The agency cited 14 crashes with two claimed injuries.
Ford says not all of these incidents are attributable to the defects the recall will address.
Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley says the company has thoroughly tested the repairs. "We have high confidence that this will resolve the issue," she adds.
On the recalled Excursions and Super Duty trucks, dealerships will check fuel injection control module wiring for chafing. They will install a protection kit if bare wires are not showing. They will replace the harness if they find bare wires.
On all of the recalled vans and some Excursions and Super Duty trucks, depending on their assembly date, dealerships are to replace the injection control pressure sensor connector terminals. Improper crimping of the original terminals causes the sensor signal to fail, Ford told NHTSA.
Separately, Ford is recalling 2005 F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks with 5.4- or 6.8-liter gasoline engines to install a retention clip on a fuel line.
The line can break loose and leak. The recall affects about 79,000 vehicles.
