The United States may be the world's largest car market, but for Smart GmbH President Ulrich Walker it's just a maybe.
Walker says his company will bring the ForTwo small car to the United States in 2007 only if "it will be profitable there," adding: "We do not need the U.S. market to be profitable with it. So it is an add-on option."
Walker told reporters that a decision on entering the United States will not be made until the end of 2006 -- which fits nicely with the debut of the second-generation ForTwo, scheduled for early 2007.
Smart definitely won't export the ForFour small car to the United States, Walker said.
Smart was scheduled to enter the United States next year with the ForMore SUV, but heavy losses forced a major restructuring.
