HS Automotive Alabama Inc. is set to expand its plant in Enterprise, Ala., with new machinery and an addition next year to its building.
The plant manufactures weatherstripping and hose products for the Hyundai assembly plant 90 miles away in Montgomery, Ala.
HS Automotive is a subsidiary of HS Rubber & Automotive Co. Ltd. of South Korea.
So far, HS Automotive makes 51 items for the Hyundai Sonata sedan, Development Manager Jack Anglea says. HS Automotive's plant needs more capacity, though, now that Hyundai is preparing to produce the Santa Fe SUV in Montgomery in March.
HS Automotive will spend an undisclosed amount of money to add a third extrusion line; hydraulic presses for joint molding; and more equipment related to brake, power steering and radiator hose lines, Anglea says.
The company makes all its weatherstripping in Enterprise. It also custom mixes its rubber on-site, Anglea says.
HS Automotive employs 150 workers at the 200,000-square-foot plant; Anglea says he expects that number to increase to 350 by March when Santa Fe production starts.
The company plans to add 100,000 square feet to the factory.
Parent company HS Rubber invested $20 million to set up the U.S. unit. It also received some government assistance.
