TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. will announce as early as this week that it will build a new plant in Canada, a seventh for the automaker in North America, says a company source.
The Nihon Keizai Shinbun, a Japanese financial daily, reported on Monday that Toyota will unveil on Thursday its plan to build a new Canadian plant.
Earlier, the Yomiuri Shinbum, a Japanese newspaper, said that the automaker would build about 100,000 RAV4 SUVs each year at a new plant in Ontario. The plant will be operational in 2008, it said.
"We'd like to make an announcement about a plant in Canada shortly," Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe said Monday.
Watanabe, who took the reins at Toyota last week, made the remarks at a press conference in Tokyo when he introduced his new management team. He declined to elaborate.
