LOS ANGELES -- Nissan North America Inc. will assemble a hybrid version of the Altima sedan at its plant in Smyrna, Tenn. Production will begin next year.
Dan Gaudette, senior vice president of North American manufacturing and quality assurance for Nissan, says the company will invest $10.4 million.
The hybrid will be a 2007 model. The car can be powered by either the gasoline engine, the electric motor or both.
Nissan is supplying the engine but will buy electrical components from Toyota Motor Corp.
Nissan has capacity to build as many as 50,000 units but has not revealed a sales target.
