DETROIT -- Well, its not for everyone, but Ford Motor Co. is trying to spread its employee discount around.
Ford will pay employees as much as $1,000 each to sponsor sales of the automakers vehicles using their discounts. It is the first time Ford has offered incentives to employees to distribute their A-, X- and Z-plan discounts to family and friends.
Steve Lyons, Fords group vice president of marketing, sales and service, announced the program in an e-mail to employees on Wednesday. It runs through Sept. 30.
Keep in mind that if every employee and retiree helps sell just one more vehicle, it would account for over 300,000 sales and an additional two points of market share, Lyons said.
Ford employees get four A-plan numbers to share with close family members. The A-plan discount, the same as the Z-plan for retirees, is 3 percent to 4 percent below invoice price. Ford also is doubling available X-plan numbers to eight for each employee. The X-plan discount, about 1.5 percent below invoice price, can be distributed to friends and acquaintances.
Employees will receive a $50 bonus for the first sale they sponsor. The bonus jumps to $75 for the second, $100 for the third, $150 for the fourth through the seventh and $175 for the eighth.
Ford spokesman Jon Harmon said the automaker was planning the incentive program before General Motors began its employee discount pricing for everyone promotion at the beginning of this month. But clearly, weve taken notice of what theyve done, Harmon said.
