Just days after ending a nine-year boycott of Mickey Mouse and friends, a conservative Christian group has turned its sights on Ford Motor Co.
Accusing the automaker of promoting a "homosexual agenda," the American Family Association of Tupelo, Miss., launched the boycottFord.com Web site last week asking supporters not to buy Ford vehicles. The group boycotted Walt Disney Co. because of its alleged "embrace of the homosexual lifestyle" in films, theme parks and corporate policy.
The group objects to Ford's employee diversity training, donations to gay community groups and marketing programs aimed at gay customers. Joe Laymon, head of human resources at Ford, counters: "Ford values all people regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and cultural or physical differences."
Using the Disney boycott as a gauge, Ford may have little to worry about: Business Week's analysis said the boycott "appeared to have little effect" on profits. And, on the indecency front, Donald Duck still isn't wearing pants.
