MARSEILLE, France – PSA/Peugeot-Citroen has no plans to sell minicars in China.
PSA CEO Jean-Martin Folz said Western carmakers that have Chinese joint ventures cannot offer minicars priced competitively against the models sold by China’s domestic automakers.
“I think it will remain mainly a business for domestic makers,” Folz said.
He was speaking at the introduction of the Citroen C1 minicar in Marseille. PSA will not sell the C1 or its sibling the Peugeot 107 in China, Folz said.
Currently PSA sells five mid-sized models in China. The Peugeot 206 small-segment car will be added this year.
Cars priced less than E5,300 are the fastest growing segment in China, according to consultants Automotive Resources Asia.
