TOKYO -- To help stop the red ink in North America, Isuzu Motors Ltd. says it plans to sell 2,500 pickups in the United States in the second half of 2005.
Isuzu will sell two versions of the GMC Canyon: the i-280, a 4x2 extended cab with a 2.8-liter inline-four engine; and the i-350, which has a 3.5-liter inline-five engine.
Isuzu has yet to announce prices of the pickups, which go on sale in July. Its combined annual sales goal is 5,000 for the two versions.
General Motors also assembles the Ascender SUV for Isuzu.
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2006, Isuzu plans to generate $46.6 million in North American operating profit.
In the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2005, the company posted an operating loss in North America of $3.7 million.
Isuzu says it expects commercial trucks to account for most of the turnaround.
For the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2005, Isuzu's consolidated operating profit rose 3.2 percent to $812.1 million.
