DETROIT -- The average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline dropped 4 cents over the past week, just before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Drivers using regular unleaded gasoline are paying an average of $2.12 a gallon, according to AAA. That's down from $2.18 a month ago. In May 2004 the average was $2.03.
The average cost of diesel fuel also has dropped 4 cents a gallon over the past week to $2.26 a gallon. A year ago, drivers were paying an average of $1.83 for a gallon of diesel.
AAA of Hawthorne, Fla., monitors credit card transactions at 60,000 self-serve fuel stations nationwide. AAA posts its findings at www.fuelgaugereport.com.
Volunteer spotters who report to GasPriceWatch.com say the cheapest gallon of unleaded gasoline can be found in Edinburg, Texas, at $1.76 a gallon. At the other end of the scale, the spotters say drivers in San Diego are paying $2.79 a gallon.
GasPriceWatch.com gathers more than 70,000 prices submitted by spotters.
