Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama LLC began to produce salable units of the 2006 Sonata on May 12, but the ceremonial launch was Friday, May 20, in Montgomery. Hyundai says that it will build 80,000 Sonatas in Alabama this year and that those cars will go on sale as dealerships receive them. It is the first time in nearly 12 years that the Sonata has been built in North America. Hyundai produced Sonatas in Bromont, Quebec, from October 1989 until August 1993. The Chrysler group will halt production at its Warren Truck Assembly in Michigan and St. Louis (North) Assembly plants this week because of slow pickup sales. Warren, which produces the Dodge Ram 1500 and Dakota pickups, will be down for the fourth time this year. St. Louis, which produces the Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups, has worked overtime 14 of the last 21 weeks. This is the second time that plant has been down this year.
