WASHINGTON -- Veteran Hawaii dealer Mike McKenna says he has never been speechless in all of his 72 years.
But he was last week when he was named Dealer of the Year by the American International Automobile Dealers Association. McKenna was recognized mainly for taking a small local effort to keep high school students sober on graduation night and turning it into a statewide campaign to improve schools.
"I'm at a loss for words," McKenna told a cheering audience at the awards dinner Tuesday, May 17.
Others tried to describe his accomplishments.
"It's serendipity. It just developed out of the giving. It's just amazing," said David Rolf, executive director of the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association. "When people come to Mike for help, he's always had that one word. It's just 'sure.'"
