MUNICH -- Helmut Wawra is leaving Smart.
Wawra, 59, Smart's vice president for development and design, will take up an as yet unspecified post at Smart's sibling Mercedes-Benz.
Wawra led development of the Smart Roadster, the ForFour and ForMore SUV, which has been canceled.
Before joining Smart six years ago, Wawra was one of Mer-cedes' top engineers. He developed the first-generation SLK and CLK and the current C class.
Ulrich Walker, Smart president, will assume Wawra's duties.
Last week Smart's works council agreed to plans to cut 600 jobs at its headquarters in Böblingen, Germany, to help the company break even by 2007.
