DETROIT -- Robert Strazzella, Valeo SA group vice president of operations for North America, quit his job on Tuesday.
"My Harley is in a trailer, the trailer is being loaded and I am headed to South Carolina," said Strazzella. "I have had a great run but I am ready to go. If I do anything in the next six to eight months it will be baiting a fishing line or teeing up a golf ball."
Strazzella, 59, said he had been talking to the company since the beginning of the year about leaving the job.
"There are a lot of things in life that are more important than working, than where you are living or what you are doing" said Strazzella. "Things like health issues" are more important.
Strazzella worked at Dupont Automotive for 31 years before joining Valeo in Auburn Hills, Mich., in 2001.
Hans-Peter Kunz has temporarily assumed Strazzella's duties. Kunz is senior vice president of sales and business development. Company spokesperson Michelle Cox said Kunz will manage U.S. operations from Valeo's headquarters in Paris.
Valeo is 25th on the Automotive News ranking of top suppliers to North American manufacturers with $1.78 billion in original equipment sales in 2004.
