General Motors calls the next-generation Chevrolet Aveo/Kalos a world car. But initially the small car GM unveiled at the Shanghai auto show only will be built in one country.
GM Daewoo will produce the Aveo in Korea and plans to export it to Europe and the US. No date has been set for exports to begin. In China, GM plans to build the car at its Shanghai plant within 12 months, though as a kit at first.
GM aims to sell the Aveo in 120 markets worldwide. The car will be customized for each market but will retain the basic architecture, says Raymond Bierzynski, president of the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, GM's 50-50 design joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. He says up to 70 percent of the parts might be interchangeable.
