Alex Trotman always knew where he wanted to go.
While working as a young manager in Europe in 1969, he took a lesser position to get assigned to Ford Motor Co. corporate headquarters in Dearborn, Mich. Trotman was born in England and raised in Scotland but was desperate to work in the United States
He died Monday, April 25, at age 71 after a short illness, having started near the bottom and worked his way to the top of Ford Motor.
Trotman began his career at Ford in 1955 as a lowly student trainee in the purchasing department at the company's Dagenham, England, plant. He rose to become Ford chairman and CEO and presided over some of the company's most profitable years.
He was the company's first foreign-born CEO, holding the top job from 1993 until 1998 -- go-go years for Ford Motor.
