DaimlerChrysler's color of choice for the Maybach brand is black.
The ultraluxury Maybach business is profitable after only three years on the market, says Eckhard Cordes, head of the Mercedes car group.
Cordes says the automaker sold about 500 Maybachs worldwide last year. Nearly one-half - 244 of them - were sold in the United States, where the brand now has 71 dealers. The U.S. base price of a Maybach is about $328,000.
But Cordes acknowledges that initial forecast of 1,000 Maybach sales per year was too optimistic. "Five hundred cars is an outstanding annual result. The entire market segment is smaller than forecast," he told German newspaper Die Zeit.
