Klaus Maier will replace Joachim Schmidt as head of sales and marketing at Mercedes Car Group starting April 1.
Schmidt is being replaced following a decline in sales and profit at Mercedes-Benz, the most important brand in the group that also includes Smart and Maybach.
Schmidt will soon be given another top position at DaimlerChrysler.
Maier is currently executive vice president of D/C’s commercial vehicle division. He will be replaced there by Hubertus Troska, currently CEO of Mercedes’ AMG performance division.
Separately, a scandal that has rocked D/C’s German sales organization is assuming greater proportions.
A high-ranking company official who declined to be identified said auditors have more “black sheep in their crosshairs.”
Investigators are trying to determine if company employees have been involved in illegally exporting cars outside of the regular sales channels to foreign markets.
According to a report in Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, the prosecutor’s office in Stuttgart is investigating as many as 11 individuals, all accused of breach of fiduciary duty. Most of them are said to be D/C employees.
