Europeans may argue that military-style Hummer SUVs are too large, but in some Russian circles a Hummer just isn’t big and tough enough.
Some Russian millionaires are opting for a St. Petersburg-built luxury armored car called the Kombat that can – when upgraded – withstand anti-tank rockets and 12.7mm heavy machine gun fire. Even with lighter armor, the Kombat can defeat rounds from AK47s and sniper rifles.
Inside, the Kombat offers a minibar, DVD player, television and navigation system. Kombat designer Dmitri Parfenov told British newspaper The Guardian that he hopes to sell 100 Kombats a year in the UK for up to £180,000 (E259,000), stealing sales from the Hummer H1, a civilian version of the US military’s Humvee.
The unarmored Hummer weighs 2,132kg. In full armor, the Kombat weighs 4,250kg.
