William Clay Ford Sr. was on hand for 57 years, helping run the family business, but you never heard much about him.
He wasn't No. 1; that was big brother Henry II. He wasn't No. 2; that job was filled by a string of outsiders from Robert McNamara to Jim Padilla. But Bill was there, doing what needed to be done. He probably was HFII's closest confidant.
Bill Ford Sr. stepped down last week from Ford Motor Co.'s board of directors. We wish him well. Most of all, we wish him a Super Bowl victory for his beloved Detroit Lions.
