Peugeot expects to sell 100,000 units a year of its 206 small car in China despite a slowdown in the country’s auto market.
The French automaker will start 206 production at its joint venture plant with Dongfeng Motor Corp. in Wuhan at the end of this year.
“We shall be selling 100,000 206s annually within three to four years,” said Peugeot managing director Frederic Saint-Geours at the auto show here.
The 206 will keep its hatchback body style for the China market, despite Chinese buyers’ preference for sedans.
Peugeot entered China late last year with a 307 lower-medium car. To suit local tastes Peugeot builds the 307 as three-box sedan at the Wuhan plant, halfway between Beijing and Hong Kong in Hubei province.
Peugeot expects to increase China sales of the 307 to 40,000 units this year. Last year the automaker sold 12,000 307s to Chinese customers, below its 15,000 unit target, said Saint-Geours.
