Split sourcing, a common Volkswagen purchasing strategy, is used with the sixth-generation VW Passat. Grupo Antolin and Peguform share the door panel contract 50/50, with Peguform delivering to VWs Emden, Germany, factory only. Peguform also delivers bumpers to Emden only, sharing the contract with Rehau.
The Passat is the first upper-medium segment car in Europe to be equipped with full electric power steering. ZF Lenksysteme supplies the unit, despite saying in 2003 that it would postpone further development of the system until it could lower costs by about 20 percent.
The cost problems are not solved, but we [have made] good progress together with VW, says Heide Göhler, a spokeswoman for the German supplier. TRW Automotive supplies a significant level of safety- and comfort-related equipment to the Passat. The US partsmaker delivers passive safety items – front, side and curtain airbags – and active systems such as electronic stability control.
