XM Satellite Radio Inc. has more than 3.3 million subscribers and expects to have 5.5 million by year end. So the company thinks the time is right to raise its monthly fee.
Beginning April 2, XM will charge $12.95 a month for its service. That's up $2.96 from the current monthly fee. The increase puts it on par with rival Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.
XM says subscribers can lock in the current rate by paying in advance for as much as five years of service. As part of the rate increase,
XM is moving some former extra-cost channels into its basic lineup and dropping the extra charge to listen to broadcasts via the Internet.
