DETROIT -- In today's market, Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler group can do only one thing with their cash rebates: raise 'em. And that's what the two companies did last week.
Some of the increases on 2005s were sizable - $1,500 on the Dodge Durango SUV and Dakota pickup and the Jeep Grand Cherokee and $1,000 on the Ford Expedition SUV and some F-150 pickups.
Lincoln made no change in its rebates, and it retains the dubious distinction of offering the biggest lures: $7,000 on the 2004 LS and $6,000 on the 2004 Town Car. It is holding the 2005s closer to the vest - $3,500 on the Town Car and $3,000 on the LS.
Among the 2005 imports, Nissan added $500 to the rebates on the Armada SUV, Titan pickup and Quest minivan, and Suzuki cut the Grand Vitara giveback to $1,000 from $1,250.
