The lack of clean diesel fuel is a major barrier to Ford Motor Co. putting diesel engines in its American cars, Ford COO Jim Padilla said.
"There are so many good diesels out there. But we need clean diesel fuel, which we won't have for another 12 to 18 months," Padilla said.
Clean diesel fuel with 15 parts per million of sulfur will become available in most states in fall 2006. But even with the reduced sulfur content, American diesel fuel won't be as clean as European diesel fuel. Padilla says legislation in the United States has yet to enable the same kind of penetration that diesels have achieved in Europe.
