GENEVA -- Wolfgang Bernhard made a much-anticipated appearance at the show but said little and made no news.
Bernhard, Volkswagen's minister without portfolio, is still learning the ropes and isn't allowed to say much.
The former firebrand at the Chrysler group spoke briefly at a VW dinner and apologized for having a bad cold.
Bernhard is scheduled to begin running the VW brand late this year. He was hired after his appointment to head Mercedes-Benz was rescinded at the last moment.
"As you know, I am a minister without a specific situation, which has many advantages," he said. Bernhard will be spending most of the next year familiarizing himself with VW products, people and culture.
Bernhard said he has had no shortage of suggestions for how he should spend his time.
"I've been interested to read all the things I should and should not do," he said.
"I can tell you I feel truly at ease and at home with VW," he said. "I am really looking forward to my future as the head of the VW brand, which is one of the best brands in the world."
