North American car and truck production last year was down 0.3 percent, or 41,794 units, compared with 2003.
U.S. car production was down 6.3 percent; Canadian car production was up 4.2 percent; Mexican car production was down 1.5 percent; and North American car production was down 3.5 percent.
U.S. truck production last year was a record 7,763,592. That was up 4.4 percent over 2003. Canadian truck production was down 8.9 percent; Mexican truck production was down 0.6 percent; and North American truck production was up 2.1 percent. U.S. car production last year was at its lowest point since 1958. Last year automakers built 4,235,245 cars. In 1958, 4,244,035 cars were built. Ford Motor Co. last year had its smallest production year in 12 years, with 3,480,305 units built. General Motors last year produced 4,991,924 vehicles. That was the first time since 1998 that GM's annual production was below 5 million units.
