SAN FRANCISCO -- Yahoo Inc. said on Tuesday that it struck a deal that makes AutoTrader.com the exclusive provider of used-car classified advertisements on Yahoo Autos, the automotive section of the Internet site.
The companies said their aim is to match more online buyers and sellers.
Yahoo previously had gotten "for sale" listings for certified used cars directly from a variety of providers, including automakers Audi, Toyota and General Motors.
AutoTrader of Atlanta, whose principal stockholder is Cox Enterprises Inc. subsidiary Manheim, said it has more than 2.5 million vehicle listings from 40,000 dealers and 250,000 private owners.
Yahoo's other classified businesses include its employment service HotJobs.
Classified advertising was estimated to be a $16 billion business for U.S. newspapers in 2003, according to the Newspaper Association of America.
