Volkswagen group has struggled to differentiate its Audi and VW models since dividing the company into brand groups.
It was a bit of a shock when Audi slapped a huge front grille on the new A6 and proclaimed it a new design look for the brand.
But this autumn a production version of the Volkswagen GTI popped up with a very similar grille, confusing many observers as well as insiders.
Axel Mees, recently fired head of Audi America, was no exception. "It's certainly hard to understand," said Mees when asked about the similarity. "I asked the same question."
But A6 designer Achim Badstübner sees a clear distinction.
"I think it's a completely different approach," he says. "The GTI grille doesn't have chrome, and there's a completely different bar in the center."
Oh, of course.
