One of the two lines at General Motors' Janesville, Wis., assembly plant will be down this week because of slow sales. The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs are built on the line. Except for vacation weeks and changeovers, it is the first time the line has been down since at least January 1995. GM will close three other lines for one day this week. The second line at Janesville, Wis., will be down today, Nov. 22, halting production of Chevrolet, GMC and Isuzu medium-duty trucks. Lines at Spring Hill, Tenn., will halt production of the Saturn Ion and Vue on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
All U.S. assembly plants will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday, Nov. 26. U.S. truck production reached 7 million on Friday, Nov. 19. This is five days earlier than in 2003.
