TURIN -- Fiat plans to send groups of workers home for days at a time during November and early December in order to cut production in line with orders, a spokesman said on Wednesday.
Fiat's Sicilian plant Termini Imerese will stop making the Punto city car for three weeks from November 15, with 1,400 workers staying at home.
The Turin-based Mirafiori plant will halt the lines making the Lancia Lybra, Alfa 166 and Lancia Thesis for the week beginning November 15, affecting 1,300 people.
At the Cassino factory near Naples, work will stop on the Fiat Stilo from November 22 until December 5 with 3,440 workers downing tools.
Italian companies can layoff staff for up to 52 weeks over two years during which time workers are paid from a state-and-company fund.
