SHANGHAI -- Volkswagen AG showed a concept of a diesel-electric hybrid-powered Golf car at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum here last week. The automaker said it hopes to introduce the technology in Chinese fleets before making it available to consumers.
VW says its diesel-hybrid concept can be incorporated into existing powertrain systems, which would keep production costs low.
The decision to work on a hybrid powertrain was a reversal of an earlier decision, VW says.
"We are in discussions with the board of management about new kinds of technology," Matthias Rabe, executive director of research for the Volkswagen Group, said of hybrids.
