Modern Engineering Inc. of Rochester Hills, Mich., is using acquisitions to broaden its reach in the industry. The company offers engineering, design, technical staffing and supply chain services. Don Lee, Modern Engineering's vice president of marketing, talked about the company with Special Correspondent Monica Link.
You acquired two companies this year - MC Technology Solutions Inc. of Madison Heights, Mich., and Efficient Engineering Co. Inc. of Troy, Mich. How will that help?
The acquisitions give us the ability to offer more engineering services to all of our clients. The ability to offer tool design technology will allow us to be more efficient. MC Technology had networking software and 3-D design imaging. Efficient Engineering had tool design and parametric tool design.
Who are your largest automotive clients, and what do you do for them?
Our biggest client is GM. Our second biggest is DaimlerChrysler. We do a lot of manufacturing and tool design for GM. For DaimlerChrysler, we do a lot of supply chain engineering work. We really focus on complex assembly operations.
In the last year and a half, we've added about 20 new clients. This past year we started working with Oxford Automotive, Mercedes-Benz, Arvin Meritor and BorgWarner.
What are you doing for those companies?
We help Oxford Automotive with cost reduction through supply chain engineering, reprocess manufacturing, inbound logistics, engineering analysis and technical tools. We help Mercedes with supply chain engineering to ensure that they are operating on a lean system. For ArvinMeritor we do packaging engineering and logistics engineering studies and execution. We provide BorgWarner with technical staffing.
