TOKYO -- Honda is studying whether to bring diesel engines to the US.
"There would be room in America for a diesel vehicle," said Honda Motor CEO Takeo Fukui at a company press event here.
Honda engineers are confident that they can reduce harmful emissions from the company's diesel engines to meet stringent US standards.
Currently only Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz offer diesel cars in the US. Jeep will start selling a diesel-powered Liberty SUV this autumn.
Demand for diesels in the US could rise significantly if gasoline prices, hovering around $2 a gallon, stay high, as many experts predict they will.
