TOKYO -- Toyota plans to build an assembly plant in Russia with a capacity of 15,000 cars a year, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun business newspaper reported.
According to the newspaper, Toyota plans to begin building cars in Russia in 2008. It has not yet chosen a production site, the newspaper reported.
Toyota sold 25,110 vehicles in Russia last year, the company said.
Japanese carmakers have been stepping up their presence in Russia.
Japan's exports to Russia in the first half of this year rose 3.2 times to 42,240, according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Assoc-iation.
Russia was Japan's 10th largest export market, after No. 9 France.
