Audi is the shining star among Volkswagen group's brands and Martin Winterkorn aims to keep it that way.
The Audi chairman and technical director's attention to detail has helped the brand, a relative newcomer to the high-end market, compete with -- and sometimes surpass -- German rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz when it comes to design and the materials quality.
Winterkorn appears to have his sights set on another German automaker. The Pikes Peak crossover concept, due in 2006, could battle the Porsche Cayenne. The two cars will share the same platform, which also is used for the VW Touareg SUV.
In addition, the Audi LeMans sports car concept, if built, would compete with the Porsche 911.
