The EPA has certified the Ford Escape Hybrid for fuel economy as high as 36 mpg. The front-wheel-drive Escape Hybrid is rated at 36 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 33 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive version is rated at 33 mpg city/29 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined.
Ford says its first hybrid vehicle has the best fuel economy numbers ever certified for an SUV. Ford had targeted fuel economy of 35 to 40 mpg. The Escape Hybrid went into production last week at Ford's assembly plant in Kansas City, Mo.
Ford will start shipping the Escape Hybrid to dealers in September, although significant volume isn't expected until October. Ford plans to produce 20,000 Escape Hybrids during the SUV's first full year of production.
