I have been reading with interest the musings of Bernd Pischetsrieder, Volkswagen CEO, and his views on the management and marketing techniques of his company in regard to the VW Phaeton.
My opinion is going to be hard for Pischetsrieder to accept, but the Phaeton in any configuration with a VW emblem on the front of it and priced in the neighborhood of $90,000 is a loser.
Don't get me wrong, the Phaeton is a great automobile built with good quality, but it suffers from 70-plus years of little economy cars as brothers and sisters.
Why is Volkswagen trying to be something it isn't?
Why not do what you do best and make a great deal of money doing it?
Who has greater inroads into China with small cars than VW? If VW wants to branch out and make luxury cars, at least have the good sense to use one of the expensive nameplates it already owns, a la Bentley.
Then all the marketing dollars spent trying to convince the driving public that the VW name should be accepted immediately as an expensive luxury automobile could be spent on another factory in China.
