WASHINGTON -- Federal safety officials have begun a preliminary evaluation of 2002-04 Saturn Vue SUVs to determine if the rear suspension is defective.
Wheels collapsed under two Vues during government testing for rollover tendencies in June, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
One was a four-wheel-drive Vue; the other was a two-wheel-drive model. NHTSA said it also received a consumer complaint that a rear wheel collapsed after a severe driving maneuver.
A preliminary evaluation is the first step in NHTSA's process of investigating possible safety defects.
