PSA/Peugeot-Citroen often gets credit for being the first automaker to sell cars with diesel particulate filters. But PSA was only the first in Europe.
Mercedes-Benz sold diesel particulate filters as early as 1985 in North America. The 350 SDL Turbo was equipped with the technology between 1985 and 1987.
Those filters were troublesome, tending to clog, which led to some damaged turbochargers. In total Mercedes sold 13,830 units with diesel particulate filters.
