FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen has not tried to hire DaimlerChrysler top manager Wolfgang Bernhard, VW Chief Executive Bernd Pischetsrieder said on Thursday.
"I have at no point had negotiations with Mr. Bernhard," said Pischetsrieder, following a media report that Bernhard was about to join VW.
Bernhard has been expected to leave DaimlerChrysler ever since his promotion to head the Mercedes car group was blocked, after sources close to the company said he was unlikely to stay.
Speculation had mounted that he would join Volkswagen. Recent media reports -- including reports in Automotive News and Automotive News Europe -- had linked him to the job of head of the Volkswagen brand car group, which includes other brands such as Bentley, Skoda and Bugatti.
