The management shake-up at DaimlerChrysler further entrenched the influence of Chairman Juergen Schrempp. Wolfgang Bernhard, 43, moves from COO of the Chrysler group to Frankfurt to head the Mercedes car group. Some company insiders question whether the brash young executive has the experience to run the company's crown jewel. Tom LaSorda, 49, a manufacturing expert who spent most of his career at General Motors, is promoted to COO of Chrysler. Frank Ewasyshyn, 51, a Chrysler lifer, replaces LaSorda as executive vice president for manufacturing. In Frankfurt, Bernhard and Mercedes boss Juergen Hubbert, 64, will co-manage the Mercedes group from May 1 to Aug. 1. Then Bernhard takes over, and Hubbert will lead a team to manage the integration of Mercedes, Chrysler and Mitsubishi products. Schrempp, 59, receives a 3-year contract extension until 2008. Bodo Uebber, 44, another young protege of Schrempp, will succeed Manfred Gentz as full board member in charge of finance, effective Dec. 16.
