Bernd Gottschalk, president of the VDA, Germany's automotive association, opposes replacing the label "Made in Germany" with "Made in Europe."
The EU commission has proposed the change as a way of promoting EU member states. But Gottschalk sees "Made in Germany" as a way to tout German engineering and branding and calls labeling German-made goods as European "pointless."
He notes that Germany's most important foreign production location this year will be China, not a neighboring EU member.
Gottschalk says: "The next thing will be the UN clamoring for a label Made on Earth.' "
