LOS ANGELES - Consumer rebates on new-car purchases in January were up 15 percent compared with January 2003.
January's average cash rebate was $2,732, up $357 from the same month last year, according to Power Information Network data. Also, the number of consumers who got cash back increased to 56 percent, up from 45 percent in January 2003. More than two-thirds of Big 3 and Hyundai customers got a rebate.
DaimlerChrysler customers averaged the largest cash rebates at $3,301, followed by General Motors at $3,150 and Ford at $2,763. Nissan was the highest paying import brand, with an average of $1,946 cash back.
