FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German electronics firm Epcos AG said on Monday it had won an order worth more than 200 million euros ($255 million) to deliver piezo fuel injection parts to parts maker Robert Bosch GmbH.
Epcos said in a statement that the contract would run until 2008.
Piezo technology components can switch twice as fast as conventional solenoid valves, enabling more finely tuned engine operation with reduced emissions and fuel consumption, and increased power.
The new contract is for components for diesel engine injection systems, but Epcos said it was also working with Bosch, the world's biggest manufacturer of fuel injection systems for internal combustion engines, on a gasoline version.
About a fifth of Epcos's business is in automotive components, a sector that is growing fast as carmakers add more electronic gadgets as part of their standard offerings and engines become more dependent on precise electronic tuning.
