DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Corp. is close to passing Ford Motor Co. as the world's No. 2 automaker.
Toyota will announce global vehicle sales today, Jan. 26, in Japan. The company's retail sales are expected to be about 6.78 million units, an estimate released by Toyota President Fujio Cho in a late December meeting with analysts and reporters.
Toyota's retail estimate exceeds the 6.72 million wholesale units sold by Ford in 2003.
Ford's wholesale numbers, reported on Jan. 22, were down from 6.97 million units in 2002. A direct wholesale-to-wholesale comparison can be made after the first week in February, when Toyota plans to release 2003 financial results, including wholesale sales.
