I am a Chrysler dealer, past chairman of the national dealer council, and I feel very strongly that no matter how J.D. Power wants to explain (sugarcoat) his comments in The Wall Street Journal, it was clear to me and other franchised dealers that he thinks our franchise system is outdated and should move in the direction of the Wal-Mart system.
He leads people to believe that we charge customers an additional 30 percent markup. Comments like that, in a trusted publication, such as the Journal, are dangerous, even though it is obvious that J.D. Power does not understand the industry that made him what he is today.
I feel strongly that the manufacturers should look for other survey companies and break the hold that J.D. Power has on them. I don't want to hurt my manufacturer, but I don't plan to participate in any survey that J.D. Power sends out and will advise other dealers and any customers that we have close relations with to do likewise.
I don't see how any dealer can support a company that advocates our demise.
